‘Leading Across the Generations’

The modern workforce is evolving at a quick clip and creating a cohesive whole at work – among disparate individuals no less – is more challenging than ever before.

This very conundrum ultimately inspired me to take a lifetime of lessons, learned over 25+ years at the helm of a diverse team, and turn them into a proverbial playbook, designed to equip seasoned managers and new leaders alike with the tools needed to stay ahead of the curve in both managing and motivating today’s dynamic workforce.

Consider it a practical guide for managing and motivating a multigenerational workforce gleaned from personal experience.

My newest (ninth!) book, Leading Across the Generations, is now available on Amazon.

Musings on marriage

Earlier this month, I traveled to Warsaw to celebrate the marriage of my firstborn son. If you have never experienced a Polish wedding, BEWARE: They last two to three days and include multiple fascinating customs, from the family blessing to the “oczepiny,” or unveiling. The entire journey got me thinking:

We Are,

All of us,

Most Alive,

When We Are Loved.

My wife is a second-generation American from Poland; my son’s new wife is Polish, and the newlyweds will live in Warsaw. I returned (a bit reluctantly) home to Tucson with my heart full, excited about their future.

Na Zdrowie.

World would be better if everyone had a mom like mine

Charlotte Anne Arnold, my Mom, is enjoying her well-earned later years here in Arizona. We’ll be celebrating her and all moms this Sunday on Mother’s Day.

It wasn’t always so easy for her – or us. She was the very definition of a single parent for much of my childhood, working hard outside the home and raising three children in our home in less than ideal parts of Western Kentucky. She was a great role model for what hard work and sacrifice should look like.

Oh that the entire world had a Mom like mine, it would be a better place.

A love letter to Arizona

The sun rose over the rugged landscape, casting a warm glow over towering red rocks and sprawling cacti. A lone hawk soared overhead, surveying the vast expanse of desert. A coyote howled, its mournful cry echoing across the valley.

The air was dry and hot, yet filled with the sweet scent of blooming wildflowers. As the day unfolded, the sky transformed from a deep blue to fiery orange and pink, a spectacular sunset that seemed to last for hours.

It was in these moments, when nature put on its most stunning show, that the true beauty of Arizona was revealed.

In a time of discord, soccer brings people together

I never saw or played in a soccer game until I was in my 40s. The first time I was on the pitch and the whistle blew, my heart began racing. It’s hardly slowed since. I not only love this sport, I think it can heal America’s wounds.

Where else can a family of four buy game tickets for less than $50, leave their screens home and join others outside, cheering, chanting and singing for their favorite teams. The new season for FC Tucson starts in three weeks.

Soccer has more fans worldwide than any other sport. Find out why.

Insure yourself and your business from cyber ransom

As mentioned in my last column, cyber attacks are becoming more sophisticated – and businesses and individuals must take proactive measures to protect themselves. You need a comprehensive action plan covering company-mandated strong passwords, software updates, multi-factor authentication, firewalls and employee training.

And finally, cyber insurance can provide financial protection against ransomware attacks that involve hackers encrypting a company’s data and demanding a ransom payment to restore access to the data.

Cyber insurance policies can also help businesses comply with data privacy regulations that impose strict rules on how businesses collect, use and store personal data. Non-compliance can result in hefty fines.

Most active threat is one business leaders think least about

Run a business and you learn one thing: If you don’t delegate enough to trusted associates, you’ll not have enough time to perform your most important duty – scanning the horizon for opportunities and threats.

Ironically, our most active threat today is the same one most business leaders think the least about: cybersecurity. See, there you go, thinking it was time to move on to the next story. Stop, I’ve made it simple for you.

I’ve written more than a half-dozen books. This short primer is my most important. It simply outlines the issues and solutions to save your business – now.

The Magic of America is captured in our words

“America will never be destroyed from outside. If we falter and lose our freedoms, it will be because we destroyed ourselves.” – Abraham Lincoln

I love thinking, reading and – lately – writing about America. I’ve written several best-selling books that are available on Amazon and my own website, but one of my latest books is not.

“The Magic of America” is a small book of 76 inspirational quotes from great American leaders and writers that I’ve collected into one volume. I’d be happy to send you a copy if you’ll email me your name and mailing address. Send me your favorite quotes.

Why do you own so many insurance policies?

You probably have a half dozen insurance policies in your desk – ones to protect your home, car, life, business, disability, health, cyber risk, identity theft, maybe even your boat or scooter.

Why so many? Because to this point insurance companies have to calculate your risks at a micro-level. That’s what they’ve always done. That will change.

In a few years, I predict you will be able to buy a “human” macro policy, a single entity to cover whatever you ride, buy, rent and do. Instead of underwriting based on risk, insurers will protect all your needs in one policy. Someday.

Tomorrow’s office a mix of AI and excellent humans

I’ve been spending a lot of time lately exploring and implementing artificial intelligence (AI) into our office work systems.

I’m amazed how computers can write press releases, articles, reports – maybe one day this column. I’m impressed how AI can produce photos and videos and sales presentations – even legal documents and computer programming code.

While AI can assist us in getting work done and making our workforce more efficient, it cannot replace the famously friendly humans in my company’s office. Their devotion to clients and finding the lowest insurance rates is aided by AI, but will not be replaced by it.
