Merkin Vineyards opens wine bar in Scottsdale

Merkin Vineyards

Maynard James Keenan, front man for Tool, A Perfect Circle and Puscifer who began making wine in Arizona in 2004, has opened his first-ever wine bar, Merkin Vineyards Old Town, located in Scottsdale.

By design, Merkin is walking distance from LDV Winery, Carlson Creek and Aridus Wine Company’s local tasting rooms, making it a mini wine trail.

Merkin offers wines by the glass and bottle as well as Arizona craft beers. A storefront section of the bar is stocked with Caduceus, Merkin and Puscifer wines – all made by Keenan – and other featured Arizona wines and sundries from Keenan’s farms.

Wine Business Monthly recognizes Aridus Wine Company

Aridus Wine Company

Aridus Wine Company, which is headquartered in Willcox, Arizona, and has a tasting room in Scottsdale, Arizona, has been a named among the top “Hot Brands” in wine by Wine Business Monthly.

The list is developed each year to recognize vintners, growers, wineries and wines that are making a statement in the industry while also exceeding all expectations with regard to quality.

Scott and Joan Dahmer founded Aridus Wine Company in 2012. Its growing location – in the Chiricahua Hills appellation – was of particular interest to the judging panel as was its proactive work toward becoming an entirely estate-sourced operation.

Arizona tasting rooms making local wine scene even sweeter

Carlson Creek Tasting Room

The Arizona wine scene is growing every day. Most local groceries stores and higher-end beverage stores such as Total Wine and Bevmo carry dozens of Arizona-based varietals. But it’s worth the drive, especially to Cochise County, to see the vineyards and tasting rooms yourself.

The Willcox Wine Region is particularly impressive with more than a dozen great spots to sip. The regions host events, which include Sierra Vista Sips & Skies on May 26. Wineries include:

• Golden Rule
• Passion Cellars
• Flying Leap
• Carlson Creek
• Aridus
• Coronado
• Bogeda Pierce
• Zarpara
• Kief-Joshua
• Pillsbury
• Laramita Cellars
• Sand-Reckoner
• LDV
• Four Trails
