What motivates you to take action? Is it reading about something in the newspaper that piques your interest? Is it seeing a story on television that does the trick? Perhaps it is being introduced to someone whose story is just the encouragement you need to get involved.

For some, motivation may result in volunteering for an organization or running for office. For others, it might mean registering for a 5K or taking up ballroom dancing.

September seems like the perfect time to get motivated. So shake off the summer vacation sluggishness and refocus on reaching your end-of-year goals.

I always assumed the “dog days of summer” meant days so hot that even dogs didn’t want to go outside.

It turns out the phrase has nothing to do with dogs or hot summer days.

The ancient Greeks noticed that the summer’s most intense heat occurred during the 40 days when Sirius, the brightest star in the sky, rose and set with the sun. The daytime addition of the warmth of Sirius – Greek for “glowing” or “scorcher” – to the blaze of the sun equaled extreme heat.

To them it was simple math. To me, it is simply hot.

Stay cool.

The days of the Arizona business community taking a couple months off during our hot summer season are gone.

There was a time a few years ago when almost no major business decisions were made in June, July or August, because the decision-makers were in San Diego or some mountain retreat to escape the heat.

There are still vacations to be had and trips to be taken – but there’s no sign of the traditional summer break for business. Companies are seizing the opportunity to plan for the fall, and many are getting an early jump on their fall initiatives.

Independence Day

Fathers are known to offer great advice. Sometimes we ask for it, other times it is simply given to us, unprompted. Maybe you’ll listen to what he has to say or maybe you’ll ignore it completely.

Maybe something he said all those years ago has proven valuable in the long run. It’s always nice to know you’ve got someone in your corner cheering you on.

Father’s Day is June 16. To all the dads out there and those that play the role of dad in our lives, here’s to you on your special day – and thanks for the great advice.

Independence Day

Celebrations of mothers and motherhood can be traced back to the ancient Greeks and Romans, who held festivals in honor of the mother goddesses Rhea and Cybele.

This Sunday is Mother’s Day, where according to the National Retail Federation, 84% of U.S. adults are expected to celebrate Mom and those in our lives who take on the mom role. Seems we’ll be spending about $25 billion this year to show our love of mom. Candy, flowers, perfume and dinners top the list. But nothing beats a phone call … approximately 122 million phone calls will be made on Mother’s Day.

October marks the beginning of the fall season. Temperatures are beginning to dip back into the double digits. The leaves are changing in some parts our state. Pumpkin festivals and haunted houses are in full swing. And you might even see festive holiday decorations up in some of the stores.

But October is also the month where we rally around a few causes – breast cancer awareness, domestic violence awareness, mental health awareness, diabetes awareness, among many others.

Please take a moment this month to consider supporting organizations doing great work on these and other important issues facing our communities today.

Get out to vote

Copper State of Mind

Arizona is in the midst of its primary election season. Candidate signs are popping up on street corners, mailboxes are overflowing with postcards and fliers and advertisements are hitting the airwaves and the pages of local newspapers. Primary elections occur every two years, always in an even year for federal, state, county and local offices that are up for re-election.

Arizona has an open primary, which allows voters registered as independent to participate by telling their county recorder which partisan ballot they’d like to receive.

Vote early by mail, or vote at the polls, but please vote. Thank you.

Do you have a back-to-school mindset?

Copper State of Mind

With record-breaking temperatures hitting Arizona this week, it is hard to imagine that there are some school districts where kids are already heading back to the classroom. In the olden days (you know, when I was in school), back to school meant getting a new pair of shoes, a new outfit, a new lunch box and thermos (which I would promptly break within the first week) and of course, new school supplies.

I still love buying new school supplies and now do that and donate them to some of the many nonprofits that provide these to kids in need.
