Girl Scout cookie season kicks off Jan. 21

Girl Scout cookies

For six weeks each year, Girl Scouts in Arizona participate in the largest girl-led entrepreneurial program in the world: the Girl Scout Cookie Program. From Jan. 21-March 3, more than 11,000 girls in central and northern Arizona will take part with the goal of selling 3 million packages.

The cookie program is one of the most effective financial literacy programs in the world, developing girls’ skills in five areas: goal setting; decision making; money management; people skills; and business ethics.

Sales also have the potential to impact the community as troops reinvest their proceeds with service projects.

Arizona kids ranked more physically fit

physical activity

Arizona’s kids are doing better than their peers nationally when it comes to physical activity, according to a nationwide report card.

The 2018 U.S. Report Card on Physical Activity for Children and Youth graded school-age children on nine different indicators, with kids nationwide earning no better than a “C” in any category. Arizona scored slightly better than the national average in six of the nine indicators.

The report comes amid a push to get more physical activity for children, with a new law this year requiring schools provide two recess periods for children from kindergarten to fifth grade.

Subway, Pioneer Title Agency surprise Boys & Girls Club

Boys & Girls Club

Subway Kids & Sports of Arizona and Pioneer Title Agency joined together on Dec. 7 to surprise nearly 60 children at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Flagstaff, delivering each child a bike, helmet, lock, clothing and gifts to help make their holiday season a little more merry and bright. The children and their parents were also treated to a Subway-catered party during the event.

The surprise was an extension of the Subway Kids & Sports’ Cycle for Success program, which awards children for random acts of kindness in schools, as well as Pioneer Title Agency in Action, Pioneer’s community relations arm.

Your ‘one word’ in 2019

2019 word

One Word 365 says by choosing your word, it becomes the compass that directs your decisions and guides your steps.

Focus on being rather than doing. Your one word isn’t a constant reminder of what you “should be doing.” It should inspire how you want to live.

Be authentic. Your word should reflect YOU, and no one else. You want a word that’s uniquely yours, and resonates with you on a deep level.

Don’t overthink it. There’s no wrong answer. Don’t analyze it to death. It’s simply about identifying the word that keeps coming back to nag at your heart.

New grant will help send addicts to treatment programs

addict treatment program

The Pima County Board of Supervisors accepted a three-year, $1.475 million grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to combat opioid addiction.

Named the Unified Medication Assisted Treatment Targeted Engagement Response (U-MATTER), this program will pair peer navigators with counselors to respond with law enforcement when they encounter an individual struggling with substance abuse. Counselors will refer those individuals to community treatment programs as an alternative to jail.

Program funding will also train officers and program staffers in Mental Health First Aid and other techniques proven to be effective in preventing overdose deaths.
