The Addams Family, live in Phoenix

Make plans to join Valley Youth Theatre this Oct. 13-29 as they set the stage for Halloween with The Addams Family who – from Wednesday and Morticia to Uncle Fester and Cousin Itt – are mysterious, spooky and altogether ooky.

This comical feast unfolds at the Herberger Theater Center and embraces the wackiness in every family. Experience the spellbinding magic of what happens to America’s favorite frightening family when secrets are disclosed, relationships are tested and the whole horrid crew faces the one thing they’ve managed to avoid for generations: change.

Hold your tickets tight lest Thing sneaks in and snags ’em.

Smart home devices boost safety

These smart home devices can save you money and increase safety – which often equates to fewer claims and less hassle.

Here’s how:

Smart programmable thermostats save energy and, by extension, money.

Smart irrigation systems can be controlled from anywhere and save valuable resources (not to mention headaches).

Water leak detectors can prevent costly water damage by alerting you to burst pipes or leaky valves.

Smart locks and garage door openers improve security, prevent theft and decrease chances of loss.

Smart plugs and motion sensor switches save on electricity and reduce the risk of electrical fires.

Read on for further details.

Fall fashion trends you will actually wear

Fall feels a lot like hitting a fashion reset button. From layering and transition pieces to updated basics and trends coming back in style, fall is where fashion statements come to life.

Check out these 2023 fall fashion trends:

Tailored suiting – Designers are returning to classic fitted tailoring and steering away from the oversized trend.

Preppy footwear – Think ballet flats, loafers, Mary Janes + riding boots.

Peplum tops – Ready or not, the peplum silhouette is making a comeback, but in a 2023 way.

Maxi skirts – Whether it is jean, cargo or silk material, 90s maxi skirts are everywhere this season.

Budgeting for your bridesmaid duties

Have you heard of bridesmaid burnout? It’s real. I should know, I’ve been there 16 times.

Think about it. You’re wearing an expensive dress that will never see the light of day after the wedding. According to Wedding Wire, bridesmaids spent between $1,200-$1,800 in 2017. Consider inflation and that amount is much higher today.

“You should only say yes to what you truly can commit to with integrity,” says etiquette expert Lizzie Post. This is not to say we don’t want to be part of our bestie’s big day; it’s about knowing it’s okay to say no to being a bridesmaid.

Transitioning from summer to fall

Summer may officially be over, but for me it lingers until the Gulf of Mexico gets too chilly for swimming. A beach person, I center my weekend activities on the casual life of the Mississippi Gulf Coast.

My Pass Christian house, Pass Time, reflects a simple lifestyle, perfect for reading, beach walking and boat trips to the barrier islands of Ship, Cat and Chandeleur. Chasing dolphins never gets old.

With September closing, it’s time to shift gears and embrace the changes that fall brings. Fairs and festivals will replace island excursions – at least until the Gulf warms up next spring.

This European city will start charging entrance fee in 2024

If you’re spending the night you are exempt, but if you are just visiting Venice for the day in 2024, be prepared to pay a 5 euro entrance fee on peak days. That’s about $5.35 with the current exchange rate. Not a huge amount, but notable in that it’s the first city in the world to charge day visitors.

While not yet back to pre-pandemic levels, when the number of annual tourists topped 5.5 million, the City of Canals welcomed more than 4.6 million visitors in 2022. With its narrow streets and foot bridges, the hordes of visitors overwhelmed the city.
