It has been our pleasure to highlight our communities’ businesses and nonprofit organizations’ many successes. Happy Statehood Day to Arizona

Copper State of Mind

Feb. 14 is Arizona Statehood Day.

The Grand Canyon State was originally part of New Mexico and was the last of the 48 conterminous United States to be admitted to the union.  Here are a few more facts as we celebrate our 109th year:

• Arizona has 22 national parks and monuments and 35 state parks and natural areas.

• Arizona’s Sonoran Desert is the only place where the iconic saguaro cactus grows.

• The 800-mile Arizona Trail is perfect for hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding and cross-country skiing.

• Two of the top-rated US waterfalls are located here: Grand Falls and Havasu Falls.

‘The Hill We Climb’

Copper State of Mind

Before Jan. 20, I didn’t know the first thing about the nation’s Youth Poet Laureate. Who am I kidding, I didn’t know we HAD a Youth Poet Laureate. That is until Amanda Gorman stepped up to the podium at the Inauguration and wowed the world. Her powerful words, recited in just under six minutes, spoke volumes about the resiliency of our country, our struggles and accomplishments, our similarities rather than our differences.

She began writing at a young age, using it to overcome a speech impediment. “Poetry is an instrument of social change,” she said.

I believe she is right.

Do You Make New Year’s Resolutions?

Do You Make New Year’s Resolutions?

The thing about resolutions is that I tend to not keep them.  Sure, I would like to eat better and to exercise more, but I say that all the time, not just at the New Year.

A few years back I decided that I would set goals instead. So, in addition to a walking goal and how many books I want to read, added to the list for 2021:

• To continue to re-prioritize what is important

•To continue to re-connect with family and friends in a more meaningful way

• To continue to re-focus how I spend my time and resources

Resiliency

Resiliency

If 2020 has taught us anything, it has been the power of resiliency. Among the many qualities of someone who is resilient are their problem-solving skills, ability to adapt to stress and adversity and their strong social connections. These and so much more are evident in the stories in this week’s issue of The Arizona 100.

Working with the Arizona Association for Economic Development, we asked its members to share examples of their resiliency during the past year. What follows is just a small example of how resiliency has played out in our cities and towns across Arizona.

Happy Holidays, all!

The Holiday Season May Look a Little Different This Year

The Holiday Season May Look a Little Different This Year

Recent news reports have been filled with stories about how this holiday season may look a little different. Typically, this time of year is steeped in traditions. Some of our favorites: time spent with family and friends, shopping for gifts and taking some time off from work. There’s all the great college rivalry football games to watch.

The thing about traditions is they have to start somewhere, so maybe this is the year to start something new.

Whatever your new traditions may be, enjoy the season, remain diligent and continue the safety protocols that are in place to stay healthy.

Holiday Season Brings Out the Best in Us

Holiday Season Brings Out the Best in Us

What does it mean to be a servant-leader? A servant-leader focuses on the growth and well-being of individuals and the communities to which they belong. Servant leadership, in my view, applies not only to the individual but organizations as well, as we all have a responsibility to invest in our communities. To be a good leader, you must serve first.

As the holidays approach, we pay tribute to some of the businesses, foundations and non-profit organizations that are serving our community. Whether through financial support or providing important social services programs, we are grateful for the important role they play.

There is Still Much Work to be Done

There is Still Much Work to be Done

The last several weeks have seen your mailboxes, inboxes and voice mailboxes overflowing with political messaging for candidates and propositions. The elections were on Tuesday and those direct-to-voter efforts are over. Or at least over for now. Whichever candidate is declared the winner and whatever propositions go into effect, exercising your right to vote means you have been an active part of the process.

But voting is just one step in the process.  If the outcome is to your liking, stay involved. If the outcome is not to your liking, stay involved. There is still much work to be done.

What is the Purpose of a Debate?

It is election season and we have been inundated with debates from candidates in both the local and federal races. In your opinion, have each of the candidates for office clearly stated their position, making it known where they stand on their issues? Both sides have been declaring victory, but the winner of these debates will be not be known until after Nov. 3, Election Day in the United States.

There has been much debate about the value of these debates. Whether they solidify your decision or give you reason to rethink a candidate, your vote will decide the winner.

Arizona Cities & Towns

Arizona is rich in history. Do you know how Prescott got its name? Or that a card game played a role in the naming of a local city?

Arizona is rich in history with stories of early settlers moving west to find their fortunes. The Grand Canyon State achieved statehood on February 14, 1912, the last of the 48 coterminous United States to be admitted to the union. Originally part of New Mexico, the land was ceded to the United States in 1848 and became a separate territory in 1863. This issue is chockfull of fun stories of Arizona’s rich history.
