‘The Hill We Climb’

Copper State of Mind

Before Jan. 20, I didn’t know the first thing about the nation’s Youth Poet Laureate. Who am I kidding, I didn’t know we HAD a Youth Poet Laureate. That is until Amanda Gorman stepped up to the podium at the Inauguration and wowed the world. Her powerful words, recited in just under six minutes, spoke volumes about the resiliency of our country, our struggles and accomplishments, our similarities rather than our differences.

She began writing at a young age, using it to overcome a speech impediment. “Poetry is an instrument of social change,” she said.

I believe she is right.
