There’s been a lot of talk about how the EV revolution will finally kill off the manual. Folks are saying demand is waning, and besides; you can’t build a manual EV.
Hogwash, both points. First, while manual ownership may be dropping overall, demand for specific models with a manual is healthier than ever; more than 75% of Miatas and Subaru BRZs are still sold with a manual.
Second, a manual EV can be done. Ford and Toyota have both filed patents for a manual EV, which not only signals the possibility – but that major automakers realize we’ll want manuals forever.
