Ukraine images a reminder of soldiers’ bravery

I’ve been lucky – I’ve never buried a best friend or siblings, but when I served in the U.S. Army in Colorado, I was too close for comfort.

One day, we were mustered for “a training mission.” After an 8.5-hour flight, we landed in a jungle. My roommate and two good friends didn’t return alive. I discovered there’s an eternity in pauses between bugle notes in “Taps.”

I fully respect soldiers. They’re real heroes. I merely helped with goggles in the back. There isn’t a day these tragedies don’t circle back up in my mind. You don’t get past it.
