The father of Arizona beer

German entrepreneur Alex Levin.

Alex Levin was a German entrepreneur who introduced beer to Arizona in the mid-1860s.

As people migrated West, railroad laborers and miners longed for a place to socialize at the end of their shifts. Levin seized the opportunity and created Pioneer Brewery, the first commercial brewery in Arizona.

After that initial boom, the state’s early brewing industry faced difficult challenges like prohibition, supply route difficulties and poor water quality.

It would be until the 1980s when Arizona’s craft brewing industry exploded with signature beers and beloved breweries and tasting rooms that continue to gain popularity and continue what Levin started.
