The U.S. Open Tennis Championship is an end-of-summer tradition in New England where, since 1987, it’s been the fourth and final Grand Slam event of the year.
What began in August 1881 on grass courts (at the eponymous casino in Newport, Rhode Island) moved to New York’s West Side Tennis Center in 1915 where, between 1975-77, matches were played on clay.
In 1978, the U.S. Open moved to its current location in Flushing Meadows, Queens where pros have been serving and volleying on DecoTurf® – an acrylic topped asphalt or concrete base – ever since. Watch live coverage through Sept. 10.
