Phoenix City Council to vote next month on arena renovations

Phoenix arena renovations

The Phoenix City Council delayed its vote until January on the $230 million renovation of Talking Stick Resort Arena in downtown Phoenix. The arena has been home to the Phoenix Suns since it opened in 1992. The venue also hosts concerts and other events throughout the year.

The most significant details of the deal would have Phoenix paying $150 million for arena renovations and the Suns paying $80 million for renovations.

The Suns signed a 40-year lease in 1992, but the agreement includes a provision for the Suns to opt out in 2022 if the building is considered obsolete.

Arizona earns 2023 Super Bowl

The respective owners of the NFL love Arizona. Last week, during the NFL owners meeting in Atlanta, they voted to host Super Bowl LVII at University of Phoenix Stadium in 2023.

This will mark the fourth time Arizona will host the event. According to Arizona State University, the last time the state hosted in 2015 it resulted in more than $700 million in economic impact on top of the hundreds of millions of dollars that pour into Arizona in winter/spring as a result of the Waste Management Phoenix Open, Fiesta Bowl, Barrett-Jackson Auction, MLB spring training and more.
