Sweet Arizona state history

February is rife with historic milestones for the Grand Canyon State.

Land that comprises Arizona was acquired by the United States as part of the 1848 Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo – which, when it was signed on Feb. 2, ended the Mexican War, extended the United States’ boundaries by more than 525,000 square miles, and established the Rio Grande as the official border between the two countries.

The Territory of Arizona, formerly part of the Territory of New Mexico, was formed on Feb. 24, 1863. But the sweetest deal of all came on Valentine’s Day 1912 when Arizona became the 48th state.
