The Card Game That Created Show Low

The Card Game That Created Show Low

Located on the Mogollon Rim, Show Low was established in 1872 by two local ranchers, both Army veterans.

Their desire to expand their land created a major debate over who should stay and who should seek land elsewhere. The pair played a card game to make the decision.

It is said that the winner of the game had to “show low” numbers in order to take ownership of the land. To honor its history, beyond the name of the city itself, the main street is called Deuce of Clubs.

Today, the region’s top industries include tourism, aviation and higher education.
