Non-football history unfolds on the gridiron

Christmas came early in 1927 when, on Dec. 10, Phoenix Union High School dedicated Montgomery Stadium, one $80,000 gift-of-a-venue that quickly rose to (gulp) non-gridiron related fame.

The city’s annual, “Masque of the Yellow Moon” pageant – named after the Native American tradition of pausing to give thanks for prosperity and good promise during the full moon in spring – was said to rival the best Super Bowl half-time shows during its three-decades run (minus a six-year hiatus during World War II).

The show, considered a rite of passage for local youth, culminated in 1954 when a whopping 2,000 students performed.

Bravo.
