My granddaddy would not recognize his party

My granddaddy voted for one political party all his life. He would not vote for them today. He wouldn’t even recognize them. Thomas Jefferson said, “If I could not go to heaven but with a party, I would not go there at all.”

I understand both of their thoughts. I’m conservative on some issues and progressive on others. I don’t see a party that fits me. They are all moving to the fringes and I’m not.

Why can’t we return to a more civil society where Americans aren’t obligated to self-identify as being aligned with the extremists on either side?
