I was a horrible student. My high school counselor spent 30 minutes with each of my classmates, suggesting colleges. He spent three minutes with me and said, “Get a job or join the Army.”
At 04:00 the day after graduation, I was on a bus to basic training. If I stepped out of line, I’d have to run an extra hour. I discovered discipline and exercise. The entire experience shifted my brain. Finally, I was ready to learn. I spent Saturdays in the library reading everything – Adam Smith, economics, politics, finance, leadership. I could not get enough knowledge.
Still can’t.
