Frances Willard Munds paved the way for women’s suffrage in Arizona.
From an early age, she demanded opportunities for education. After attending college, Munds became a school teacher and was involved in the women’s rights movement. In 1903, she was elected president of the Arizona Equal Suffrage Association and was instrumental in Arizona women gaining the right to vote almost 10 years before the 19th Amendment was passed.
Munds went on to become the first female senator of Arizona and the second female senator of the United States. In 1982, she was inducted into the Arizona Women’s Hall of Fame.
