Arizona’s story was written by women from all backgrounds. From indigenous leaders and pioneers to Latinas and civil rights leaders, the Copper State has a long history of trailblazing women.
Arizona fought for women’s suffrage before it even established statehood, passing the right for women to vote in 1912 – eight years before the rest of the nation.
Women also held all of the state’s five elected offices in 1998, representing the highest number of women to serve in the state’s public offices at any given time.
Other notable Arizona women of influence include Sandra Day O’Connor, Jean Fairfax and Linda Ronstadt.
